The Hurt Locker

3 Aug

Perhaps the first apolitical film about the Iraq War The Hurt Locker is the story of three soldiers of the Armies Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) team and their responses to the confused moralities of modern warfare, with a healthy does of explosions, shootouts and edge of your seat suspense.

This is definitely the best action movie of the summer (sorry Transformers 2…but let’s be honest it wasn’t good, it was just Michael Bay), and maybe the best movie of 2009 so far. Not to hype it up to much or anything. But it’s one of those movies that keeps you on the edge of your seat and leaves you thinking.

Director Kathyrn Bigelow (Point Break and K-9: The Widow Maker) has a serious understanding of the action drama, keeping the focus of the movie tightly on the characters, which helps build the tension of the bomb defusing sequences to the point where you honestly don’t know what will happen. It is the suspense of believability that Bigelow and writer Mark Boal cultivate so well.

Boal, who spent several months embedded with an EOD team as a journalist for Rolling Stone, is able to bring the real life experiences to a classic film archetype. Jeremy Renner (SWAT) plays the maverick and almost reckless Sgt. James who sweeps in to replace a by-the-book fallen team leader in Delta company. James’ disregard of standard operating procedure upsets his teammates: the consummate professional, Sgt. J. T. Sanborn (Anthony Mackie) and the lost farm boy Specialist Owen Eldridge (Brian Geraghty), almost to the point of tearing the unit apart and driving each man beyond the brink.

It is one of those films which everyone has heard was great, but they don’t know where they heard it from and don’t seem in a rush to see it.  Don’t be one of those people, run don’t walk to see it. You’ll thank yourself for it…and me really, because if you’re  reading this, then, well …just go see the movie.

Watch the opening sequence!
